Its a book that doesnt just require, but demands patience and careful reading.
A lovely set of one of the major works of modern SF. This is a meaty book, with lots of layers to digest. Spine ends of THE SWORD OF THE LICTOR just a bit pushed, else a fine set in fine dust jackets. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature I, pp. Pringle, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels 95. Gene Wolf has a wonderful writing style but the story is on the strange. The first volume won the 1981 World Fantasy award, and was winner of the British Science Fiction Association Award, Novel, 1982 the second won the 1981 Nebula award. The Shadow of the Torturer is a sci-fi story that has the feel of a fantasy world.
